古地図や絵図はどうしても読みにくい。ならば江戸時代の地理情報を、現代の誰もが見慣れたGoogleマップのデザインで描いたらどうなるか——そんな発想から制作した作品。Googleマップのデザインリニューアルが話題になっていたタイミングで投稿したところ、Twitterで約4万いいねの反響があった。当時は歴史にそこまで詳しくなかったが、投稿後にリプライで改善点を指摘してもらい、修正を重ねた。ネットの集合知によって作品が磨かれていく体験でもあった。その後、近畿・北関東にも範囲を広げた版を制作し、いずれも大きな反響を得た。のちにこの1枚の画像がインタラクティブなWebマップ「れきちず」へと発展することになる。
Historical maps and old cartographic drawings are inherently difficult to read. What if the geography of the Edo period were rendered in the familiar design of Google Maps? That question led to this piece. Published when Google Maps had just undergone a design refresh, it gained approximately 40,000 likes on Twitter. At the time, my knowledge of Japanese history was limited, but after posting, many followers pointed out inaccuracies in replies, and I was able to rapidly iterate and improve the map. It was an experience of a work being refined through the collective knowledge of the internet. The coverage was later expanded to the Kinki and northern Kanto regions, each version also gaining significant attention. This single image eventually evolved into "Rekichizu," a fully interactive historical web map.
